Long-term exposure to particulate matter - even below the currently set limits - is associated with an increased risk of heart attacks. Scientists come to this conclusion in a current population study.
The researchers examined the effects of fine dust on health. The result: high air pollution at home increases the risk of a heart attack.
The scientists evaluated the data from over 100,000 participants. At the start of the study, all participants were heart healthy. During an observation period of an average of 11.5 years, data on cardiovascular disease was collected and compared with concentrations of air particles summarized under the term "fine dust" at the place of residence.
An increase in the annual concentration of fine dust by 5 µg / m³ or 10 µg / m³ in the air increased the risk of heart attack by 13 or 12%. This also occurred when the particle concentrations were below the EU-wide limit values. (pm)
