Do soft drinks make children aggressive?

Whether cola, sprite or orange lemonade: it is precisely because of the high sugar content that soft drinks are so popular with children. However, the high sugar content in them not only damages the body to a proven extent, but should also promote aggressive behavior.

This is the conclusion reached by researchers from three American universities. They evaluated a total of 2,929 children aged five years. The focus was on aggression, the ability to concentrate and general social behavior. It has long been known from previous studies that these drinks cause depression and even suicidal thoughts in adolescents. A total of 52 percent of the subjects were boys. 43 percent of them drank a glass of lemonade every day. Four percent even drank four or more glasses. A control group only drank water.

Soft drinks increase aggression and reduce alertness The Columbia University Director of Studies, Shakira Suglia, found that with each glass more lemonade the score in the aggressive behavior test increased. Vandalism and aggressive behavior were more pronounced in children who drank a lot of the sweet shower than in others. Your ability to pay attention was also lower.

However, it is unclear to the authors of the study whether these results are solely due to the high sugar content, caffeine or additives such as aspartame and phosphoric acid. Because too low a sugar level can increase the potential for aggression. The fact that the mothers were asked about the behavior of their children is also not scientifically flawless. It cannot be ruled out whether the results are really subject to scientific objectivity or whether they are just feelings of the mother. Furthermore, the researchers have not given any precise information on the amount of drinking. The portions could all have been different. Conclusion: Now the further connection between the behavior and the soft drink consumption has to be examined in further studies in order to be able to make a scientifically unambiguous statement. However, the current study provides strong evidence that these relationships exist. (fr)
