ADHD: 20 percent more medication prescribed
More and more young adults are getting more and more medicines to treat ADHD. This is shown by a current evaluation by the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK).
The number of patients between the ages of 17 and 20 years who were prescribed a drug for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) increased by twelve percent between 2011 and 2012. The number of prescribed medication packs for this age group increased by around 20 percent in the same period - the specialist group of pediatricians even prescribed twice as many packs.
One reason for the increase in the number of prescriptions in young adults is very likely that a drug with the active ingredient methylphenidate has only been approved for adults since April 2011. This drug "Medikinet adult" can be prescribed for 18-year-old patients if the patient was diagnosed with ADHD in childhood and other therapeutic measures are not sufficient. (pm)
