Numerous studies have proven the effectiveness of homeopathy
The effectiveness of homeopathy has been documented for over 200 years and has been proven by numerous studies. Homeopathic medicines are successfully used by over 7,000 doctors in Germany. The doctors, mostly specialists, have the additional qualification of homeopathy or the homeopathy diploma from the German Central Association of Homeopathic Doctors (DZVhÄ), this is an advanced training. The patients' positive results are confirmed in numerous surveys. So far, there are only theories as to why homeopathic medicines cure. The mechanism of action is not clear.
It is a false claim often made by homeopath critics that there are no high quality studies that show positive results on the effectiveness of homeopathy. Both double-blind randomized studies and studies from health services research show that homeopathy works beyond a placebo effect. This view is also shared by the Cochrane Collaboration, the guardian of the grail and the highest authority of evidence-based medicine (EBM): Every systematic examination (review) of homeopathy concludes with the conclusion that more research in this area is necessary. "Today there are more than 200 randomized clinical studies on homeopathy, of which more than half have a statistically significant positive result in favor of homeopathy," the authors of the website www.information-to-homoeopathy.de write. However, many of these studies have too few cases or show methodological deficits. The bottom line, according to the experts, is 25 studies that can be combined in systematic reviews or in meta-analyzes.
The number and choice of studies included in a meta-analysis can manipulate the result in a desired direction. In 2005, homeopathy received the death blow so medially: The end of homeopathy was the title of the respected British Lancet and the German media picked up the headline. In a meta-analysis, one research group initially compared 110 studies on homeopathy with 110 similar studies on conventional medicine. The result was positive for both therapy directions. In the next step, only eight homeopathic studies were compared with sec hs conventional studies. The result: the end of homeopathy. The scientific approach of this research group was heavily criticized, but the headline was in the world.
Health care research - The method in a practical test The studies from health care research show an astonishingly uniform picture: Patients who can be treated with homeopathic treatment have clinically relevant improvements. Comparative studies are particularly interesting from the perspective of health services research, in which the completely normal homeopathic medical practice is compared with the conventional medical practice as a control group. The therapeutic effects for homeopathy are just as good as in conventional medicine. From the perspective of health services research, the benefits of homeopathy for patients and the health system can be assumed. This is also the conclusion of the Health Technology Assessment, which is part of the Swiss program Evaluation of complementary medicine (PEK): “In summary, it can be stated that there is sufficient evidence of preclinical effects and clinical efficacy (evidence levels I and II) and that it represents an absolutely safe and inexpensive intervention, especially in comparison to conventional therapies. The acceptance among the population is high. ”
DZVhÄ reader for homeopathy research In order to provide an overview of homeopathy research, the DZVhÄ has compiled a study overview. This is available as a file with many directly linked sources on the website www.welt-der-homoeopathie.de. (pm)
