Measures to strengthen the body's defenses are not an issue
Men do not pay much attention to their immune defenses during the cold season, according to the results of a recent survey by the market research institute GfK on behalf of the health magazine "Apotheken Umschau". In the case of women, at least almost a third of those questioned were concerned about their own defenses in winter.
Numerous measures that strengthen the immune system are available for the cold winter months. But men seem to have little interest in prophylaxis against colds and flu. In the current GfK survey, three quarters of the men surveyed stated that, even in winter, they did not behave differently in terms of disease prevention than they did during other seasons. The increased risk of a cold or flu infection does not seem to concern most people. Only a minority of women were particularly concerned about their own health in winter, but they were more sensitive than men.
Three quarters of men worry about an increased risk of colds and flu in winter
The immune system was put to the test in the wet and cold weather of the past few weeks. But "the cold season with the risk of colds, flu, cough, runny nose can not particularly worry the men in Germany," reports the "Apotheken Umschau" in a current press release. The representative survey by the market research institute GfK showed that 75.8 percent of the 936 men surveyed do not take any special measures to prevent or strengthen the immune system in winter. Although women are a little less carefree, 69.9 percent of the 982 women surveyed do not pay much attention to their immune system during the wet and cold season, s the health magazine said.
Many men do nothing when the first symptoms appear
Even if the first cold symptoms such as headache, cough, runny nose and fever appear, 30 percent of men initially do nothing at all, but wait and see how the disease develops. Here, however, women show a significantly higher level of concern. Only 16.1 percent of them remain carefree when the first symptoms appear. Most, on the other hand, first try to get the symptoms under control with medication and home remedies for cough or runny nose or decide to visit a doctor directly. On behalf of the "Apotheken Umschau", the GfK market research institute surveyed a total of 1,918 people aged 14 and over. (fp)
