Greens criticize inadequate plans to reduce antibiotics in animal husbandry

The massive use of antibiotics in animal husbandry has been criticized for months due to the associated spread of multi-resistant pathogens. The Federal Agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner (CSU) had already agreed at the spring conference of agriculture ministers with the federal states to create the legal basis for a corresponding Germany-wide antibiotic database as part of the planned amendment to the Medicines Act.

However, this measure is not sufficient to sustainably reduce the use of antibiotics in agriculture, the deputy group leader of the Greens in the Bundestag, Bärbel Höhn, told the "Frankfurter Rundschau" (FR). The Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection's draft law does not do justice to the growing spread of antibiotic resistance in veterinary and human medicine, according to Höhn's criticism of the planned amendment to the Medicines Act.

Reducing antibiotic use in animal husbandry The Greens have long called for the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry to be curtailed. Various studies have shown farmers' careless handling of medicines and linked them to the spread of multidrug-resistant pathogens. Antibiotics are often still used today to promote growth in factory farming, although this has long been prohibited. In order to understand how much antibiotics are used in which company, a corresponding database is urgently required. Aigner has long since recognized this after initial data protection concerns. However, the question now arises as to which measures can help to reduce the use of antibiotics. Because the simple recording of the grievance does not promise any improvement.

Essential antibiotics become ineffective If the procedure continues as before, "factory farming means that vital antibiotics will become ineffective," Bärbel Höhn told the "FR". Also, "the measures proposed by the federal government are too lax in order to tighten the increasing To get a grip on the resistance situation, "continued the former Minister of Agriculture of North Rhine-Westphalia." However, deaths of immunocompromised people due to resistant germs are too high a price for the production of cheap chips, "criticized Höhn. The agricultural expert of the Greens parliamentary group, Friedrich Ostendorff, added to the "FR" that "improved documentation requirements do not yet constitute a reduction strategy." Studies in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia have shown that the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry has now "reached a completely absurd and dangerous level. "

Unclear effects of the use of antibiotics on the environment The Greens are also extremely dissatisfied with the Federal Government's response to a recent request for antibiotics in livestock farming. The Federal Minister of Agriculture admitted that "with 780 tons of antibiotics a year more is used than the ministry previously assumed, and 114 million chickens received antibiotics on average 2.3 times in their 32 days," the Greens report in a corresponding press release. 27.5 million pigs were given 5.9 antibiotics in the course of six months, and 90 percent of the antibiotics were excreted unchanged by the animals. According to the Greens, the polluted manure and manure then land on the floors without any major concerns. According to Friedrich Ostendorff, this raises numerous questions, such as "What happens to the antibiotic active ingredients and what effects do they have on soil organisms?" Or "How do the crops that grow on the contaminated soil change?" These points remain in the The Federal Government's answer, however, is outside, so the criticism of the green agricultural expert.
