Cigarettes are more harmful to women than to men

Smoking damages health - every child knows that. Scientists say women with cancer-typical cancers lose more years of life than men with the same diseases.

Women lose 10.5 years of life due to smoking-related illnesses. When women fall ill with the typical illnesses that are associated with tobacco use, they die on average 10.5 years earlier, compared to only 2.9 years for male smokers. This was the result of an evaluation by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, as was announced on World No Tobacco Day.

Another terrifying result: Ten years ago, 36 percent fewer women died of bronchial, lung, larynx and tracheal cancer than today. In 2010, 13,815 women did not survive their cancer, "which can be linked to the consumption of tobacco products," according to the Federal Statistical Office on its website destatis.de. Accordingly, the proportion of women in deaths from such cancer tumors has increased significantly. In 2010, 31 percent of the 44,457 victims were women. In 2001 the female share of deaths was 25 percent.

Tobacco consumption has decreased Overall, however, the consumption of tobacco products in Germany has decreased from 398 million pieces in 2002 to 240 million pieces in 2011. At the same time, the daily amount of cigarettes and cigarillos consumed rose from 8 to 12 million, according to the Federal Statistical Office. In total, 220 billion cigarettes, 2.4 billion cherubs and cigarillos and 532 million cigars were produced in Germany last year. (ag)
