Research in the field of homeopathy is to be expanded

According to the German Central Association of Homeopathic Doctors (DZVhÄ), the alternative healing method of homeopathy should be researched more intensively in order to enable a scientific discussion about its effects.

So far, the scientific studies on homeopathy have been extremely manageable, but the few existing ones have in some cases caused clear surprises. For example, a study by Swiss researchers at the beginning of May found cost-efficiency advantages in homeopathy compared to conventional treatment methods. According to the German Central Association of Homeopathic Doctors, the lack of scientific studies on the topic of homeopathy is also due to the lack of funding. The chairperson of the DZVhÄ, Cornelia Bajic, therefore called for a stronger commitment by the Federal Government and the establishment of institutional research funding at the start of the German Homeopathy Congress in 2012.

Doctors complain about the bad reputation of homeopathy Many practitioners complain about the bad reputation of homeopathy in conventional medicine and therefore call for more research into the effectiveness of the alternative treatment method, also to enable a serious scientific debate. So far, homeopathy has been unsubstantiated under the general suspicion that, unlike conventional medicine, it is ineffective, according to the criticism at the start of the DZVhÄ annual conference on Thursday in Freiburg. The chairwoman of the association emphasized that homeopathy research needs more support nationwide - also from politics. It called on the Federal Government to become more involved in a scientific debate on the topic of homeopathy and to set up a health policy funding program that enables institutional research funding. "It cannot be accepted that research in homeopathy only takes place when foundations set up chairs or doctors are responsible for this," explained Cornelia Bajic. In the opinion of the expert, a significant expansion of research is required to finally prove the effectiveness of the alternative healing method.

Scientific examination of homeopathy required There is no question that DZVhÄ medical professionals believe that homeopathy is effective. The homeopathic doctors are wrongly regularly accused by advocates of conventional medicine that their method is based solely on the placebo effect, explained the DZVhÄ chairwoman. In fact, according to the expert, numerous studies provide information on the effects of homeopathy, but since the mechanism of action has not yet been researched, many doctors still have doubts to this day. Therefore, more intensive research in the area of this alternative treatment method is necessary to enable a scientific discussion. At the German Homeopathy Congress 2012 in Freiburg, which runs until Saturday, the scientific examination of the topic of homeopathy is one of the focal points, which the 700 congress participants discuss intensively.

More and more patients are opting for homeopathic treatment While experts are still arguing about the effectiveness of homeopathy, in practice more and more people are opting for homeopathic treatment, reported the Baden-Württemberg state chairman of the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), Andreas Vogt . Homeopathy is becoming increasingly popular and "in Baden-Württemberg around 22,000 of our policyholders have opted for homeopathic treatment in the past two years," Vogt continued. Women are asked for the offer much more frequently than men. Almost two thirds of the patients who received homeopathic treatment were women, according to the TK country chief. According to Vogt, there are also significant regional differences. For example, the homeopathic offerings of the TK, "demand is significantly higher in the southwest than the national average," said the Baden-Württemberg TK state chairman. On average, 14 out of 1,000 TK insured nationwide can be treated homeopathically, while in Baden-Württemberg it is 23 out of 1,000 TK insured. A higher rate with 25 out of 1,000 insured is only achieved in Berlin.

DZVhÄ oldest medical association in Germany According to the German Central Association of Homeopathic Doctors in Germany, around 6,500 doctors use methods of homeopathy, which illustrates the importance of this form of therapy in everyday medical practice. The DZVhÄ, founded in 1829, today has well over 4,000 members, the association being the oldest existing German medical association. (fp)
