Financial test: pay attention to the conditions of foreign health insurance

Stiftung Warentest's Finanztest magazine tested a total of 47 foreign travel health insurance policies from various insurance companies. Only seven insurance companies achieved the rating "very good". Eleven were given the grade “good”. All others received poor grades or failed the examination.

Useful international health insurance for frequent trips Anyone who travels abroad for business or private reasons or who already suffers from previous illnesses should make use of a foreign health insurance. In the event of illness, the emergency can quickly cost money. Because statutory health insurance companies and many private full insurance companies do not pay for a return transport to their home country, for example. If a medically accompanied flight then has to be made, for example from Asia, Australia, South or North America, the ambulance flight can cost up to 70,000 euros per patient. However, such a special flight is only financed by many providers if medically attested medical reasons speak for it or if it is considered "appropriate". Accordingly, consumers should study all contracts carefully before signing, as experts from Finanztest emphasize. Often, subtle formulations are hidden in the small print that are not always immediately understandable for laypersons. Before a contract is signed, the help of independent experts, such as consumer advice centers, should always be sought.

Pay attention to conditions and "exclusions health" The return transport flights and their conditions are "the sticking point" with most contracts according to the financial tester. In addition, insured persons should pay close attention to other conditions. Some insurers exclude different circumstances under the heading “Health exclusions”. According to the test, the following exclusions are common: certain previous illnesses, maximum age, co-insurance for children or emergency childcare if the parents are no longer able to take care of the well-being of the little ones due to a serious illness.

The general conditions of the policies are also noteworthy. In these, insured persons should, for example, pay attention to whether the insurer waives the mandatory deductible. Therapies that are not used conventionally, but often have an effect on serious illnesses, are also becoming increasingly important. It is therefore important to ensure that the insurance provider finances medicinal products or methods that have proven to be beneficial to health in addition to conventional medicine.

Good travel health insurance abroad doesn't have to be expensive
The Stiftung Finanztest rates the costs as positive. Contrary to some assumptions, good travel health insurance abroad does not have to be expensive. In the case of international insurance rated "very good", the policies for families of "Ergo direkt" and Neckermann, among others, cost only EUR 17.80. For single travelers, very good travel health insurance for 7.50 euros can already be purchased from “Inter”. This was also rated "very good" and was the cheapest in the segment.

The test winner was the Würzburg international travel health insurance with the "dream grade 0.9". According to the tester, the insurer has improved the terms of the contract once again since the last financial test. All results and further details can be found in the June issue of Finanztest magazine. (sb)
