It is well known that fast food contains a lot of salt. However, Australian researchers have now discovered that the amount varies greatly from country to country. They examined certain fast food dishes from six major international suppliers in Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Fast food chains could reduce the salinity of their food
Elizabeth Dunford of The George Institute for Global Health in Sydney and her colleagues uncovered that fast food providers salt their dishes to varying degrees in different countries. The international research team examined the salinity of 2,124 dishes from six large international fast food chains in Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, France and the USA. The researchers chose these fast food chains because they are the largest transnational providers of their kind.

The researchers identified McDonald’s chicken nugges in the United States with 1.6 grams of salt per 100 grams of product, which was two and a half times the salt content of the same dish in the UK (0.6 grams per 100 grams of product). In the case of spiced breakfast ingredients such as ham, the salt content in the USA was particularly high at 1.8 grams per 100 grams of product. For comparison, this was 1.4 grams in Great Britain and 1.1 grams in New Zealand. Another result of the analysis showed that Pizza Hut sandwiches are on average 70 percent saltier than those of the competitor Subway. The saltiest burgers are served in New Zealand. They contain an average of 1.4 grams per 100 grams of product. In the United States and the United Kingdom, burgers have salinity levels of 1.3 and 1.1 grams, respectively.
The scientists assume that the differences in salinity from the fast food suppliers are not accidental or production-related but are deliberate.
