Coffee lovers can breathe a sigh of relief: According to a study, the hot beverage, which is often classified as unhealthy, is better than its reputation: coffee increases neither the risk of cardiovascular diseases nor of cancer. Another surprising result of the study: those who drink coffee every day even reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Coffee is healthier than its reputation According to a study by the German Institute for Nutritional Research Potsdam-Rehbrücke (DifE), it does not matter whether caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee is consumed. In both cases, the scientists headed by Heiner Boeing and Anna Flögel were able to demonstrate that there is no increased risk of cardiovascular and cancer diseases by enjoying coffee.

Increased coffee consumption no risk of chronic illnesses For the long-term study, data on diets and lifestyle as well as medical analyzes of 42,000 adults were evaluated. In an average of nine years of observation, 1,801 subjects were diagnosed with cancer, 394 study participants suffered a heart attack, 310 a stroke and 1,432 study participants developed type II diabetes for the first time. Comparing the data from people who drank more than four cups of coffee a day to those who consumed little coffee, the researchers found that increased coffee consumption does not increase the risk of typical chronic illnesses in western industrialized countries. In addition, the study found that people who drank a lot of coffee had a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. "Our study results coincide with the results of current prospective studies from the USA," reports Anna Flögel. The study was published in the science magazine "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition".

Heiner Boeing points out that people who tolerate coffee well should drink it too. However, based on the study results, no one should start drinking coffee. It is more important to "make sure to eat enough whole grains, little meat and lots of fruits and vegetables, not to smoke and to exercise enough," explains the expert.

Coffee reduces the risk of stroke in women by 25 percent. Just one cup of coffee a day can also significantly reduce the risk of suffering a stroke. This is the result of a long-term study by scientists from the "Karolinksa Institute" in Stockholm. The Swedish scientists led by Susanna Larsson have been studying women's coffee consumption and the occurrence of brain infarctions since 1997. 35,000 women aged 49 to 83 participated in the study. Regular surveys of coffee consumption were carried out in the course of the investigation. These results were then compared to the frequency of stroke. The researchers found that the risk of stroke "was reduced by 25 percent if the women taking part drank more than one cup of coffee a day." Other studies suggest that the level of the head is an important factor. While the Potsdam study recognized no difference between caffeine-free and caffeine, other research suggests positive effects of the substance. "Patients with heart problems such as rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure or other circulatory diseases should consult their family doctor about their daily coffee consumption." (ag)
