The daylight from the sun is better for the supply of vitamin D than the solarium

In order to boost the body's own vitamin D production, experts advise you to spend the day outdoors. The face and arms can be exposed to natural light. However, frequent visits to the solarium are not suitable.

UV radiation in the solarium too strong
Experts from the German Cancer Aid and the Dermatological Prevention Working Group (ADP) warn of preventive visits to the solarium against vitamin D deficiency. The UV radiation in solariums is as intense as at midday at the equator. This increases the risk of skin cancer enormously. To prevent vitamin D deficiency, stays outdoors are more suitable. You should clear your face and arms. Just 15 to 20 minutes a day were enough to produce preliminary stages of vitamin D in the skin and to ensure the need for vitamins.

Eckhard Breitbart of the ADP explains that the vitamin D accumulated in the warmer seasons is also sufficient in the winter months. He advises elderly people, as well as the sick and those in need of care, to have their vitamin D levels checked by a doctor, because they reduce their own synthesis of vitamin D or reduce their self-sufficiency. The general practitioner can prescribe appropriate vitamin supplements in the event of a vitamin D deficiency.

Visits to the solarium increase the risk of skin cancer. Although a new UV protection regulation for solariums to protect consumer health was created, which came into force at the beginning of this year, there is no all-clear. Frequent visits to the solarium increase the risk of skin cancer.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 140,000 people contracted skin cancer in Germany in 2010. In 20,000 of the cancer cases, the aggressive form of "malignant melanoma", black skin cancer, is present. Skin cancer can metastasize and be life-threatening. (ag)
