Federal Statistical Office: Young men prefer to live with mom and dad
According to calculations by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, most young men between the ages of 18 and 24 still live in their parents' households. In contrast to their male counterparts, young women move out of their homes faster and yearn for an independent perspective.
Instead of living in shared apartments or small apartments, most young men between the ages of 18 and 24 prefer to live at home with their mothers and fathers. According to a current evaluation by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, 71 percent of young men still live with mum and dad. Apparently young women can cut themselves off a little faster. Here the couch potato quota was only 57 percent. Taken together, young adults up to the age of 24 still live with their parents in around 64 percent of cases. There have been no major changes in the past 12 years. In 2000, 65 percent of young men and women still lived at home.
Minority lives alone or in a shared apartment Only a minority of young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 live alone in their own household. According to the Federal Office, the figure is just 17 percent (2010). 13 percent lived with a friend or spouse within their own four walls (18 percent of women and 8 percent of young men). Another six percent are single parents or live with other young people in a shared apartment.
Opposing is no longer necessary today Sociologists believe that young people oppose their parents less today than was the case 30 years ago. Advanced parenting methods seem to favor conventional living together with parents in one household. According to youth researcher Klaus Hurrelmann, young men in particular fear independence. Her female contemporaries are more flexible and independent in this regard. Most women crave a professional perspective and their own family faster than their male peers. While in the past, moving out of home quickly was a good idea, most young adults prefer to live with their parents for a few years longer. (sb)
