Active exercise and endurance sports help smokers to give up their vices
Smoking is one of the most common vices in the western world. Quitting it is problematic for many not only because of the nicotine habit. Smoking is often used as a ritual to relax and switch off. The German Lung Foundation in Hanover advises on sports. It distracts and helps to give up addiction.
Regular exercise reduces the risk of relapse
According to a recent study by the West Virginia University School of Medicine, the risk of relapsing and starting smoking again is reduced through a regular exercise program. The study examined 233 smokers aged between 14 and 19 years. Male smokers in particular would be less likely to relapse if they followed a regular fitness program, the researchers report.
Exercise also has a positive impact on general well-being and improves breathing performance that is weakened by smoking. Endurance sports such as swimming and cycling are particularly suitable, according to the German Lung Foundation. This also reduces the craving for sweets that many former smokers suffer from.
Smoking is considered the main cause of COPD
Although it is well known that smoking is considered to be the main cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the massive health risk does not appear to have any impact on the German tobacco industry. Reemtsma, the largest tobacco company in Germany, announced its record result from the previous financial year: the company had sales of over one billion euros. (ag)
