The number of employees who have to leave their working lives prematurely due to depression has increased considerably in the past decades. But vacation or a break from work does not usually help to prevent the occurrence of depression, warn experts from the German Depression Aid Foundation, such as the psychiatrist and director of the polyclinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy in Leipzig, Prof. Ulrich Hegerl. According to the expert, workers who notice the first signs of a mental illness should never go on vacation, "because the depression travels with them." Hopelessness and the feeling of facing an unmanageable workload can also be signs of depression, according to Hegerl. Those affected should therefore always describe their physical and psychological complaints to the doctor or therapist. DGB calls for a reduction in mental stress in the world of work Unlike the experts at the German Depression Aid Foundation, the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) sees working conditions as an important factor influencing the occurrence of depression.
