RKI: EHEC epidemic has claimed 42 lives so far

The number of EHEC infections has been declining for days and the worst EHEC epidemic to date in Germany seems to be coming to an end. Throughout Germany, 3,688 people have contracted the new, particularly aggressive strain of Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) since the outbreak of the infection wave in early May, 42 people have died as a result of the infection, reports the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

In the past few weeks, thousands have contracted the new, particularly aggressive EHEC pathogen strain HUSEC 041, which, in addition to the comparatively harmless EHEC symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain, triggers the so-called hemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). According to the RKI, 42 people have succumbed to the consequences of an infection with the dangerous intestinal germs in the course of the current epidemic. In view of the fact that new infections have been declining for days, the experts hope that the EHEC crisis will end soon.

Number of EHEC deaths increased to 42 According to the focus of the current EHEC epidemic, most fatalities can be observed in the northern federal states. The RKI reports that twelve EHEC deaths occurred in Lower Saxony, new ones in Schleswig-Holstein and six in Hamburg. According to the institute, a relatively large number of EHEC deaths were also recorded in North Rhine-Westphalia with seven deceased. Northern Germany, like the number of infections, is clearly the focus of the epidemic. On Thursday, the Robert Koch Institute announced that three more deaths had been recorded, bringing the total number of EHEC deaths to 42. However, the RKI was also unable to provide any further information on the latest deaths when asked by the news agency "dapd". In addition to the renewed EHEC deaths, 87 new EHEC infections were also reported to the RKI from Tuesday to Wednesday. Since the outbreak of the infection wave, 3,688 people across Germany have contracted the new, particularly aggressive EHEC pathogen and / or the HUS. (fp)
