Hay fever patients are suffering particularly severely this year
The relatively warm and dry weather conditions of the past few weeks have resulted in extreme air pollution. The clouds of yellowish-green pollen make spending time outdoors particularly uncomfortable for allergy sufferers.
In addition to poplar, willow and ash pollen, most of the pollen currently consists of birch pollen, to which many hay fever patients are particularly sensitive. The relatively warm, dry weather favors a massive pollen count, which makes spending time outdoors a significant burden for allergy sufferers.
Hay fever patients hope for relieving rain Not only the farmers but also the hay fever patients are longing for rain at the moment. While some fear their earnings, others hope for a few symptom-free days without itchy eyes, runny noses, sneezing attacks, coughing or headaches. Because after the rain, the pollen load in the relatively humid air drops significantly. The water binds the pollen and allergy sufferers can breathe freely. However, as long as there is no precipitation, the hay fever plague must find another way to live with the symptoms of their illness. Or they go to treatment hoping to completely defeat the hay fever.
Treatment of hay fever symptoms - protective measures against pollen So-called antihistamines are used primarily to treat hay fever symptoms, which largely prevent the body from overreacting. However, the causes of hay fever cannot be remedied by the use of the medicinal products, and there are also possible side effects. To alleviate the symptoms, experts - like Dr. Wolfram Feußner, allergist and specialist for pulmonary and bronchial medicine from Kassel and Prof. Harald Morr from the German Lung Foundation in Hanover - the contact with the allergenic pollen is minimized as much as possible. To protect against hay fever, the windows should be closed during the day and only ventilated in the evening or after the rain, the experts emphasized. In addition, hay fever patients are advised to put their street clothes in a separate room and not to take them into the bedroom. Increased hair washing and cleaning of the face, especially before going to bed, also help to reduce the pollen load. Allergy sufferers can also use a nasal douche to gently cleanse the nasal mucosa after a long period of time outdoors and before falling asleep to free it of the pollen, explained Professor Harald Morr. Dr.'s insider tip Feussner for hay fever prevention reads: Rub the inside of the nose with a little petroleum jelly and gargle with a little cooking oil.
Treatment of hay fever in conventional medicine and naturopathy The causes of hay fever are not remedied with all of these methods. From a conventional medical point of view, only hyposensitization has so far been used, in which the patient's immune system is slowly accustomed to the allergy triggers over a period of three to five years with small doses of the allergens. If the therapy is successful, the patients will no longer show any allergic reactions. The naturopathic approach of hay fever treatment is also essentially based on a therapy of the causes, whereby, for example, promising treatment successes have already been achieved with herbal therapies, relaxation procedures, magnetic field / bioresonance procedures, autologous blood therapies as well as self-suggestion, acupuncture and homeopathy. However, if the symptoms of hay fever do not subside during the course of treatment, it is strongly recommended that those suffering from allergies suffer from conventional medical treatment of the symptoms, since according to the experts, untreated hay fever can at worst lead to asthma and other respiratory diseases.
