Study: If women drink at least one cup of coffee every day, the risk of stroke drops by 25 percent

Regular coffee consumption can significantly reduce the risk of stroke. Swedish researchers found this out in a long-term scientific study.

The prevailing opinion is that coffee is unhealthy. Just one cup of coffee a day can significantly reduce the risk of stroke. This is the conclusion reached by scientists from the “Karolinksa Institute” in Stockholm. The Swedish research team led by Susanna Larsson has been investigating women's coffee consumption and the occurrence of brain attacks since 1997. A total of 35,000 women aged 49 to 83 years participated in the study. Regular surveys of coffee consumption were conducted during the study. Based on the results, the data were compared with the occurrence of strokes.

Stroke risk reduced by 25 percent
By the end of the course in 2008, a total of 1,700 subjects had a stroke. After evaluating the data, the researchers found that the risk of stroke was reduced by 25 percent if the women taking part drank more than one cup of coffee a day. In order to limit the results, further risk factors were included in the evaluation. "Coffee may reduce inflammation, reduce oxidative stress and improve insulin sensitivity," concludes study author Larsson.

Coffee is not unhealthy
Numerous study participants assumed that the daily consumption of coffee harmed their health. "In fact, there is growing evidence that moderate coffee consumption lowers the risk of some conditions, such as diabetes, liver cancer, and possibly stroke," the researcher explained. The assumption that coffee leads to cardiac arrhythmia has long been refuted.

Indeed, other long-term studies have already achieved similar results. For example, Dutch scientists at the University Medical Center recently discovered that eating coffee and tea regularly protects the cardiovascular system and lowers the risk of heart attack. The more the participants drank coffee, the lower the risk rate. Tea users achieved even better results, with the researchers suspecting that coffee consumers generally lead a healthier lifestyle.

Coffee contains valuable antioxidants
Coffee and tea contain important antioxidants that inhibit oxidative substances in the body. This protects the body's own cell membrane and cell nuclei. These positive properties have long been found not only in coffee and tea, but also in the natural form of fruits and vegetables. (sb)
