China plans standards and norms for traditional Chinese medicine

The Chinese Deputy Minister of Health and Chairman of the State Administration for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Wang Guoqiang, said that China wants to place the effective and millennia-old healing art of naturopathy better on the world market in the future. To this end, China has increasingly worked on the normalization and standardization of TCM healing methods and agents. This procedure is to be developed further worldwide so that patients outside the Asian continent can also benefit from the holistic treatment methods.

In China, natural medicine has played an important role for thousands of years. Even today, TCM procedures are an integral part of modern Chinese medicine. In collaboration with researchers from other countries, good research results in the field of medicine have already been achieved. This is why traditional Chinese medicine is an important contribution to international medical research, according to the Chinese TCM expert.

Rethinking conventional medicine
A reversal in medical research has been observed in recent years. Instead of just fighting the symptoms, people are now starting to research the causes of diseases. Due to the holistic approach, TCM is gaining more and more weight in research. If diseases cannot be treated with conventional treatment methods, conventional medicine also uses the healing arts of TCM. More and more medical professionals are already convinced of the positive forces. There are now a number of recognized clinics in Germany whose treatment plans also include therapeutic approaches in acupuncture and herbal medicine.

Traditional Chinese medicine mainly uses substances from nature. Treatments are usually carried out with plant substances, animal preparations and minerals. TCM treatments for acupuncture, ear acupuncture and healing massages are most widespread in western industrialized countries.

Many TCM remedies will no longer be available across the EU from April 2011. In the Minister of Health's view, previously missing standardizations are the greatest weaknesses of the TCM. Because the art of healing was largely passed on orally for the most part for thousands of years. China is now working hard to create standards. The background of China's increased involvement is likely to be the new legal regulations of the European Union (EU). From April 2011, numerous TCM remedies should no longer be available in Europe. According to the new guidelines of the “European Directive on Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products”, all herbal products have to be registered again. The guidelines were adopted in 2004. Until April of this year, however, there was a transition phase.

So far, there has not been a single registration of TCM drugs. From this point in time, numerous TCM funds from China will no longer be available on the European market. In order to change this state, one now wants to work with numerous western research institutions. The Chinese Vice Minister is convinced of the scientific verifiability of the TCM. Wang Guoqiang said: “In China, there is increasing work to establish standards and norms for traditional Chinese medicine. Quality and security are better controlled. It must be possible to measure their effectiveness using modern scientific methods. ”At scientific congresses and events, China will now increasingly participate in the discussions on standards in ethnomedicine.
