As 11-HSD 1, as an enzyme, promotes the production of glucocorticoids, the blood sugar level does not drop again as intended after eating. Since diabetics are resistant to insulin and the sugar in the blood cannot be broken down, this process is particularly problematic for them. According to the results of the study, Emodin inhibits the action of 11-HSD 1, thus reducing the glucocorticoids, lowering the blood sugar level and relieving the symptoms of type 2 diabetes.
For example, when investigating obese mice with type 2 diabetes, the scientists found a clearly positive effect of Emodin on blood sugar levels. In addition, their weight and the percentage of body fat decreased and there was a significant improvement in blood values, according to Dr. Ying Leng on the results of the study.
