How do you protect yourself from sunburn?
(01.08.2010) It is vacation time and most people spend their free time in nature. But caution is advised, sunburn damages health. That is why it is important to protect yourself sensibly from the UV rays of the sun.
When do you start talking about sunburn? Ralf-Uwe Peter from the Skin and Vascular Center Blaustein told the "Südwest Presse": "Every reddening of the skin caused by sun exposure is a sunburn". Because sunburn is actually a thermal burn of the skin. In the case of sunburn, the skin turns red to dark red; in a further advanced stage, blisters can also form on the skin. In the worst case, the tissue can die.
Sunburn can cause bad diseases like black or light skin cancer. Childhood sunburns include: as the cause of black skin cancer. In light skin cancer, the lifetime dose of sunlight is the cause. Most people don't take the risk of sunburn seriously, but every year about 140,000 people get skin cancer. Every year in Germany, more than 2000 people die from the consequences of cancer. Therefore, prevention and protection against sunburn is extremely important.
The best protection against sunburn is avoiding the direct sun. No one in the southern countries would think of lying in the sun at noon. On the contrary, the "siesta" is primarily used to protect yourself from the harmful effects of heat and sun. When the sun is at its highest, people prefer to stay in the cool shade. If you still have to be exposed to the direct sun, it is recommended to limit this to a short period of time and to cover the body with sufficient clothing. The clothing should ideally be permeable to air and made of fabrics. Parts of the body that cannot be covered with clothing should be regularly lubricated with sunscreen from natural cosmetics.
Many people think that applying sun milk provides ideal protection against sunburn. This is only partially true, but the effect of the protection factor only begins after a maximum of one hour and wears off over time in the water. In addition, such products can only be recommended to a limited extent, since most manufacturers of sunscreens use chemical UV filters. The filter substances contain substances such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. PEG / PEG derivatives are also used in some creams. As a result, the skin is proven to be more permeable to pollutants. Contained fragrances can trigger allergies in some people. So if you fall back on such products, you should make sure to use natural products. These contain no fragrance or preservatives and also no mineral filter substances. In order to actually achieve an optimal effect, these creams should also offer "triple protection". That means the cream should protect against UVA, UVB and infrared. Caution should also be exercised in and on the water, because reflecting the sun's rays also increases the sun's effects on the skin.
Many errors persist in the treatment of sunburns. Some believe that an after-sun lotion can effectively treat sunburn. However, this is not true. The lotion is only supposed to help against drying out of the skin. In addition, such products are also often questionable, since they contain fragrances that can trigger allergies up to skin irritation. So-called self-tanners also offer no protection against sunburn. The "self-tanners" only change the top layer of skin, but do not offer any protection from the sun's rays. Another mistake is to treat sunburn with curd or yogurt. This is also dangerous because the skin can catch fire from the bacteria. This may make the symptoms worse.
It makes more sense to cover the skin with sterile damp wipes in the event of a sunburn. A doctor should be consulted if blisters form, the skin is dark red, and symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, chills, headache and drowsiness occur. These are the first signs of sunstroke and should urgently be treated by a doctor. (sb)
