Risk of miscarriage from antidepressants

Taking antidepressants increases the risk of miscarriage for pregnant women.

(06/02/2010) Pregnant women taking antidepressants are at higher risk of miscarriage. Based on a study by epidemiologist Dr. Anick Bérard found this connection. Bérard's team of doctors evaluated the data of 4124 women who had a miscarriage within the first 20 weeks. It was noticed that the proportion of women who had a miscarriage and took antidepressant medication was around a factor of 5.5. For women who did not miscarry but took antidepressants, the factor was 2.7. The risk of miscarriage increases mathematically in the course of pregnancy by taking depressants at the same time by 68 percent.

Although there are proven levels of alternative treatment for depression, many doctors still prescribe antidepressants. It has already been shown that acupuncture helps with pregnancy depression. Among other things, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are prescribed. According to the study results, taking these serotonin inhibitors at the same time significantly increases the risk of miscarriage.
