The AOK starts a hospital navigator.
(02.05.2010) The AOK has set up a new, interesting online rating portal, the "AOK Hospital Navigator". Patients can now search for and evaluate suitable clinics for knee and hip joint surgery as well as fractured thighs. So far around 200 hospitals from the regions of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Westphalia-Lippe have been listed. By the end of 2010, all federal states and around 1,000 clinics should be available. Visitors to the AOK hospital navigator can view the hospital data by entering a zip code. Based on the results, visitors can now see the consequences of hospital operations over a period of one year. In order to be able to deliver corresponding results, approximately 76,000 AOK patients were previously anonymously interviewed with an evaluation sheet. A QSR procedure can be used to check the frequency with which surgical complications, thrombosis or pulmonary embolism occurred and how often people died after an operation.
Only hospitals that had performed at least 30 procedures after hip, knee or thigh fractures were listed.
"From the patient's point of view, this is an important step forward," says the health manager at the Federal Consumer Protection Agency, Stefan Etgeton, praising the new AOK evaluation portal. That is a "silver bullet in quality assurance". The Navigator is designed to help patients obtain comprehensive information before they have an operation performed. Doctors can now better advise patients. Consequences can be minimized because patients now have a better overview of clinics. This also saves costs. Because if the clinics now compete, the incentive to improve the quality of the surgical treatments will increase. As a result, follow-up costs for botch for further treatments can be minimized. The consumer protection center estimates the savings potential of the health insurance companies within three years at 40 to 50 million euros. The Navigator is open to all visitors, even if they are not insured with the AOK health insurance.
