Health care costs: soon to be 300 billion annually in Germany?

The Federal Statistical Office currently states that in 2008 health costs in Germany amounted to more than 263 billion euros for treatments and medication. With that, every German came to 3,210 euros. In 2009 the number is said to have increased again. As a result, the costs in the healthcare system in 2008 were already 10.5 percent of Germany's gross domestic product (GDP) and for 2009 statisticians expect an increase to over 11 percent of GDP. From 2007 to 2008 an increase of almost 10 billion euros (3.9 percent) was recorded. This means that spending in the health sector could soon be around 300 billion per year in Germany.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, statutory health insurers had the most expenditure with almost 60 percent and thus around 150 billion euros. A large proportion of the costs, almost 50 percent, were incurred in doctor's surgeries, pharmacies and care facilities at just over 130 billion euros. The doctor's surgeries and pharmacies, at around 40 percent each, were well ahead of the care facilities at less than 10 percent. The increase in expenditure for the individual resident in Germany in 2008 compared to 2007 was a total of 130 euros - from 3080 euros to 3210 euros.

By contrast, private household spending on medications declined. This should certainly also include medicines that are prescribed by natural health practitioners in the context of naturopathy for legally insured persons and must therefore be paid for themselves.
