AOK study: Effective measures against type 2 diabetes: In a Germany-wide multi-year study by the health insurance company AOK Schleswig-Holstein and the Eppendorf University Clinic (UKE), it was found that there is a connection between abdominal girth and diabetes and confirmed effective countermeasures against the symptoms.
In a Germany-wide multi-year study by the health insurance company AOK Schleswig-Holstein and the University Clinic Eppendorf (UKE), it was found that there is a connection between abdominal girth and diabetes and that effective countermeasures against the symptoms are confirmed. 300 employees from five companies took part in the study. The researchers from the UKE led by Professor Eberhard Windler found that women with more than 80 centimeters and men with more than 94 centimeters an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
For the study, the participants were asked to eat less animal fats over a period of three years, exercise at least half an hour a day and reduce their body weight by an average of five percent. In the subsequent control it was found that none of the 240 participants who fell into the risk group had diabetes. Of the eight people in the group who already had diabetes, half had no more diabetes.
One of the reasons for the results is certainly that with decreasing body weight and fat percentage in the organism, sugar can be better brought into the cells. The increasing number of sedentary activities at workplaces and the resulting lack of exercise are probably a major factor in the development. Since a diabetes patient costs around 4,000 euros a year, the AOK now wants to use the findings of the study and carry out the measures, which are quite simple and inexpensive, in other companies.
