Compared to 1996, the number of children and young people raised by single parents has increased by 37 percent

Compared to 1996, the number of children and young people raised by single parents has increased by 37 percent. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 25 percent of young people aged 14 to 17 lived in 2008 with single parents or in so-called alternative ways of life. In 1996, just 17 percent of adolescents grew up with single mothers and fathers. At that time there were still 3.9 million young people in the Federal Republic. In 2008, around 20 percent of all young people lived with single parents. The increase in adolescents growing up with single mothers is particularly serious. There was a rapid increase of 42 percent compared to 1996.

The result of the information provided by the Federal Statistical Office is that the conventional family model with mother and father is gradually being replaced. Every fifth adolescent thus grows up with single parents. Nevertheless, the percentage of adolescents who live with their mother and father is still at 75 percent, which is the largest proportion.
